Feminine Archetypes- Myths vs Truths Answered
For many of us, the word archetypes could be new, the concept of feminine archetypes can be confusing and we might be holding some myths about archetypes. As you understand your feminine archetypes, here are some questions and myths that I would like to demystify.
Here are some Feminine Archetypes FAQs
Do Archetypes have a gender?
Behavioral traits are gender neutral like aggressive, friendly, helpful etc. But archetypes are patterns in our psyche. These patterns are coded as masculine or feminine through culture and myths and the stories we tell. Both men and women can have masculine or feminine archetypal energies. These are not really associated with gender but are two sides of the same coin which we have coded as masculine or feminine.
How do we identify feminine archetypes?
Different cultures have their own way of describing the two broad types of energies- Yin and Yang, for eg. Yin is the feminine quality and Yang is the masculine energy. The psychologist Carl Jung called female energy Anima and masculine energy Animus. Hinduism refers to these two as Shiva and Shakti energies. We have traditionally identified certain energies with women and these show up as the feminine archetypes.
Can men have feminine energies?
Yes- just as women can have masculine energies. Both energies are important but since they are different from each other, we have given them different associations. Men can have ‘feminine’ qualities like nurturing, empathy, sensitivity, flexibility, creativity.
How have we treated the power of the feminine?
Most cultures and societies have placed more value on masculine energies like aggression, achievement, rational thinking, competitiveness and physical strength. These have been seen as desirable in men but not in women. Feminine qualities like caring, empathy for others, intuition, patience, emotional expression and flexibility have been seen as weaknesses in men. We have ignored the power of the feminine and made feminine energies subordinate to the masculine.
How will knowing about feminine archetypes help me?
Due to socialization and a system of patriarchy, women’s powers have been ignored and suppressed. Feminine qualities have not been seen as powerful or important for the world- but only to serve the men. Women also have qualities of courage, perseverance, intelligence and determination along with inherently feminine qualities. Knowing about feminine powers can help women identify and own their feminine powers, overcome barriers in the form of power blocks and live their full potential.
